SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' PERCEPTION ON THE IMPACT OF CHRISTIAN RELIGIOUS STUDIES ON GEN Z FASHION IN OUR IMMEDIATE SOCIETY IN YABA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Fashion is a multifaceted concept that encompasses various aspects of personal style, cultural expression and societal trends. It goes beyond mere clothing choices and extends to encompass accessories, grooming and even lifestyle choices. Fashion serves as a means of self-expression, allowing individuals to communicate their identity, values and aspirations through their outward appearance. It is a dynamic and ever-evolving phenomenon, influenced by factors such as historical events, popular culture, art and technology. Fashion reflects and responds to the zeitgeist of a particular era, acting as a mirror to societal norms, values and desires. It can be a form of creative expression, pushing boundaries and challenging conventional norms, or it can be a tool for conformity and social cohesion (Ademola, 2021). Fashion not only influences how we perceive ourselves but also how others perceive us, shaping social interactions and impressions. It has far-reaching economic implications, driving industries such as design, manufacturing, retail and media. However, the concept of fashion is not without its criticisms. It has been accused of promoting materialism, fostering unrealistic beauty standards and perpetuating social inequality. Nevertheless, fashion remains an integral part of human culture, providing a platform for self-expression, creativity and cultural exchange.

Fashion holds significant importance in various aspects of life. Firstly, it allows individuals to express their unique personalities and creativity, serving as a tool for self-expression and self-confidence. According to Itari (2017), fashion empowers people to communicate their identity, values and aspirations through their style choices, enabling them to stand out and make a statement. Secondly, fashion plays a crucial role in the economy, driving industries such as design, manufacturing, retail and media. It generates employment opportunities, fosters innovation and contributes to economic growth. Moreover, fashion has the power to shape cultural and social norms. It reflects and responds to societal changes, influencing how we perceive beauty, gender roles and social status. Fashion also acts as a unifying force, bringing people together through shared aesthetics and trends. It promotes cultural exchange, allowing us to appreciate and learn from diverse styles and traditions.

Gen Z fashion is characterized by a unique blend of individuality, sustainability and digital influence. This is why Jindem (2021) postulated that as a generation known for their tech-savviness and social media prowess, Gen Z has redefined the fashion landscape. They prioritize authenticity and self-expression, embracing a diverse range of styles that reject traditional gender norms and embrace inclusivity. Gen Z fashion is heavily influenced by online platforms, where they discover and share trends, DIY fashion and thrifted finds. Sustainability is a key concern for Gen Z, leading to a rise in conscious fashion choices such as thrifting, upcycling and supporting ethical and eco-friendly brands. They value brands that align with their values and champion social causes. Gen Z fashion celebrates individuality, with a focus on mixing and matching vintage pieces, streetwear and high-end fashion to create unique looks. Comfort and functionality are also important, with athleisure and casual wear playing a significant role in their everyday style.

Gen Z fashion design faces a unique set of challenges in today’s rapidly changing and digitally driven world. According to Iortyer (2016), the fast-paced nature of trends and the constant influx of information through social media platforms can make it difficult for designers to keep up with the ever-evolving tastes and preferences of Gen Z consumers. Designers must stay ahead of the curve, constantly innovating and adapting their designs to capture the attention of this discerning and trend-conscious generation. Secondly, sustainability is a major concern for Gen Z and fashion designers must navigate the complexities of creating environmentally friendly and ethically produced garments. This requires sourcing sustainable materials, implementing responsible production practices and ensuring transparency throughout the supply chain. Additionally, Gen Z values inclusivity and diversity, demanding representation in fashion design. Designers need to be mindful of creating collections that cater to a wide range of body types, cultural backgrounds and gender identities. Lastly, the digital era has transformed the way fashion is consumed and marketed.

Christian Religious Studies (CRS) in secondary schools plays a significant role in the academic, moral and spiritual development of students. It provides a foundational understanding of the Christian faith, its teachings, values and principles. Nanpon (2014) submits that CRS classes typically cover a wide range of topics, including biblical studies, church history, ethics and Christian living. The subject aims to foster a sense of religious literacy, critical thinking and ethical reasoning among students. It provides a platform for students to explore their beliefs, engage in theological discussions and develop a personal relationship with God. CRS also promotes moral and character development by teaching virtues such as compassion, integrity and empathy. Moreover, it contributes to a well-rounded education by providing insights into the historical and cultural impact of Christianity on society. However, it is essential to ensure that CRS classes promote inclusivity, respect for religious diversity and create an open space for dialogue and understanding among students of different faith backgrounds. The teaching of CRS in secondary schools plays a vital role in nurturing students’ spiritual growth, moral development and providing them with a foundation of knowledge and values that can guide them throughout their lives.

The impact of Christian Religious Studies (CRS) on Gen Z fashion is subjective and varies among students. For some students, CRS may influence their fashion choices through its emphasis on modesty and traditional values. They may opt for conservative clothing styles, avoiding revealing or provocative outfits. Additionally, CRS teachings on humility, simplicity and modesty may shape their preference for understated and minimalistic fashion designs (Maram, 2019). On the other hand, some students may perceive CRS as having little direct impact on their fashion choices. They might prioritize personal expression and individuality over religious influences and opt for diverse fashion trends that reflect their unique style rather than conforming to any religious guidelines. It is important to note that Gen Z is a diverse generation with varying degrees of religious adherence and interpretations. Therefore, while some students may find a connection between CRS and their fashion choices, others may prioritize different factors such as personal style, societal trends, or personal values unrelated to religion.

It is in line with the above discussions that this study seeks to investigate students’ perception on the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion in our immediate society in Yaba Local Government Area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The ideal situation is for students to have a clear and informed perception of the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion in our immediate society. They should possess a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, societal and religious influences on fashion trends among the Gen Z population. However, the current situation reveals that students’ perception regarding the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion in our immediate society is unclear and not well-informed. There is a lack of in-depth understanding among students about the interplay between religious beliefs, cultural values and fashion choices within the Gen Z demographic.

Efforts have been made to incorporate Christian Religious Studies into the curriculum of educational institutions in Yaba Local Government Area. Additionally, educational resources, such as textbooks and teaching materials, have been provided to enhance students’ knowledge of religious studies. Despite these measures, students’ perception of the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion remains limited and lacks depth. There is a persistent gap in their understanding of how religious teachings and values shape fashion trends and personal style choices among their generation. This limited perception hinders students from fully grasping the cultural and societal implications of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion. It may lead to misconceptions, stereotypes and misinterpretations of religious and fashion practices. Furthermore, it may impede their ability to appreciate the diversity and complexity of fashion expressions within their own community.

The research aims to investigate and understand students’ perception on the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion in our immediate society. It seeks to identify the factors influencing their perception and explore the gaps in their knowledge. By doing so, it aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between religious teachings and Gen Z fashion choices among students in Yaba Local Government Area.

While some research has been conducted on the impact of Christian Religious Studies and fashion, there is a lack of specific studies focusing on students’ perception in the context of Gen Z fashion in Yaba Local Government Area. The existing literature fails to address the unique cultural and social dynamics influencing fashion trends among Gen Z students in this particular region. Therefore, there is a need for research that specifically examines the perception of students in Yaba Local Government Area regarding the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion.

Given the aforementioned gaps in knowledge and the importance of having an informed perception, this research seeks to explore and understand students’ perception on the impact of Christian Religious Studies on Gen Z fashion in our immediate society in Yaba Local Government Area. By shedding light on their understanding and uncovering underlying influences, this study aims to contribute valuable insights to the fields of religious studies and fashion, ultimately enhancing the educational experience and fostering a more nuanced appreciation of the relationship between religion and fashion among Gen Z students.
