ABSTRACT
This project work titled, “The perception of stakeholders in education on the role of African Independent Churches, (AICS) in the development of education.” The study examined the role of Christ Apostolic Church in the development of education in Bokkos Local Government Area, Plateau State. A plethora of literatures were reviewed. A structured questionnaire was considered appropriate for the collation of data. By the end, it became clear that AICS have done a great job in the development of education. Recommendations were made to others in the private sector to emulate the Christ Apostolic Church.

CHAPTER ONE
1.1 Background of the Study
Education is the process of facilitating learning or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs and habits. Educational methods include; storytelling, discussion, training and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves.
Education can take place in a formal or informal setting and any experience that has a formative effect on the way one thinks, feels or acts may be considered educational. The methodology of teaching is called pedagogy. A right to education has been recognized by some governments, including the global level: Article 13 of the United Nations’ 1966 International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights recognizes a universal right to education. In most regions, education is compulsory up to a certain age.
Bokkos L.G.A is situated in the central zone of Plateau State. It shares boundaries with Barkin-Ladi in the north, Mangu L.G.A to the east, Wamba L.G.A of Nasarawa State to the west and Jibiyal in Lafia-East L.G.A of NasarawaState to south. It has an Area of 1,682km and a population of 178,454 at the 2006 Census. (Internet). The major tribes are Ron, Kulere and Mushere. Their major economic activity is farming and the major farm produce include; Maize and Potatoes. The Local Government Area has a plethora of schools, some of which were established by African Independent Churches.
African Independent Churches (AICs) are churches founded by Africans for Africans in our special African situation. They have all African membership as well as all African leadership. The AICS are the fastest growing churches in Africa today. They are having so much impact on the missionary-founded churches that in December 7,1981 an issue of West African Magazine had an article titled “ Desertion of the orthodox churches-changes in worship.”To think of the planting of Christianity in Africa and the work of missions and churches is to think of schools. To think of the African peoples themselves over the past century is to recall the swelling demand for education above almost everything else. (Turner,1975)
AICS have established schools and employed teachers ranging from Primary, Secondary to Tertiary institutions. It is superfluous to say that millions of individuals have benefitted from these churches in the area of education, church members and non- members alike. Because of how these churches are growing fast and have great influence upon the people of Africa, it is necessary to examine their role in the development of education, education which is one sphere of their influence on the people of Africa. What has been their contributions so far in the development of education? If compared to others in the private sector, how well have they done?
It is in the light of the above questions that the research tries to investigate perception of stakeholders in education on the role of AICs in the development of education.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The education sector is in the poorest state. The African Independent Churches have been able to provide schools that offer quality educational services from Nursery to Tertiary level. The cost especially in Nigeria is very high. Odumuyima (2006) observed in his study that the tuition fees being paid in the Christian Universities are too exorbitant and beyond the reach of the common man in the society. He opines “A situation in which churches establish private universities, charge exorbitant fees should be replaced with technical colleges that can be maintained within the resources of the church. However, this study is examining the perception of the stakeholders in education on the role of AICs in the development of education.
1.3 Purpose of the Study
This research aims at;
Examining the role of AICS in the development of educational
Examining the educational activities of AICS.
Identifying the factors that can contribute to rapid development of education in Nigeria.
1.4 Research Questions
To what extent has AICs impacted education positively?
Have AICs contributed more to education than others in the private sector?
Will their continuous contribution lead to the betterment of education?
1.5 Significance of the Study
The following are the significance of the study;
The outcome of the study will educate the general public on the role of AICs on the development of education.
It will be a useful guide for the management and the authorities of AICs and their academic institutions on how to improve on their services in a bid to contribute to educational development in the nation.
This research will also serve as a resource base to other scholars and researchers interested in carrying out further research in this field subsequently, if applied will go to an extent to provide new explanation to the topic.
1.6 Scope/Limitations of the Study
This study on the role of AICs in the development of education will only cover the educational activities of Christ-Apostolic Church and
Financial constraints –Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature and information and also in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraints- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
1.7 Definition of Terms
AIC: African Independent Churches are Christian denominations which were started by Africans in Africa.
