A SOCIO-ETHICAL EVALUATION OF INDECENT DRESSING AMONG STUDENTS IN UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS AND MOUNTAIN TOP UNIVERSITY
ABSTRACT:
This study conducts a comprehensive socio-ethical evaluation of indecent dressing among students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Mountain Top University (MTU) in Nigeria. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, the research explores students’ perspectives, beliefs, and attitudes towards indecent dressing, as well as its underlying causes and implications within two distinct socio-cultural contexts. A sample of 70 participants was selected through the convenience sampling technique, and data were collected using a self-structured questionnaire titled “Socio-Ethical Evaluation of Indecent Dressing among Students(SEEIDS).” The reliability and validity of the instrument were well-established. The findings of the study present a multifaceted exploration of students’ perceptions and evaluations of indecent dressing. Students revealed a nuanced view on the ethical nature of indecent dressing and its susceptibility to peer pressure, its potential to impact behavior and judgments, and the need for regulation. They also challenged common stereotypes linking indecent dressing to wayward behavior and bad parenting, emphasizing its complex interplay with personal values and societal norms. The ethical dimensions of the study shed light on various facets such as the links to fame, sexual assault, moral upbringing, and academic performance. Proposed strategies for implementing decent dressing were also presented, providing actionable insights involving education, collaboration, supportive policies, and engaging various stakeholders. The study concludes with recommendations such as developing education and awareness campaigns, clear dress code guidelines, collaboration with the fashion industry, peer-led initiatives, engagement of parents, regular assessment, resource support, and campus-wide information dissemination. These collectively underscore the need for a holistic approach to address indecent dressing by recognizing the complexities of personal expression, societal norms, and ethical considerations.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
In today’s rapidly changing world, where societal norms and values continuously evolve, a multitude of new challenges and dilemmas emerge. Among these pressing issues, the phenomenon of indecent dressing among students has garnered significant attention. Indecent dressing entails clothing choices that deviate from accepted social norms, characterized by excessive exposure of body parts, provocative designs, or sexually suggestive attire. According to Barber (2018) this trend has become increasingly prevalent among students, prompting deep concerns about its socio-ethical implications. The rise of indecent dressing highlights the complexities of navigating the boundaries between personal expression, freedom of choice, cultural values, and societal expectations. It raises questions about the impact on individual self-esteem, objectification, and potential consequences in academic settings and professional environments. As a society, it is crucial to engage in constructive dialogue and find a balance between respecting individual autonomy and upholding shared values, while also considering the potential psychological, social, and cultural effects of such clothing choices (Edmonds, Turner & Foutz, 2017).
The socio-ethical evaluation aims to undertake a thorough analysis of the effects of indecent dressing on both students and the wider society. It involves a critical examination of the underlying factors that contribute to this prevailing trend, delving into societal influences, personal choices, and cultural norms. According to Bennet and Wright (2019) by exploring the consequences of indecent dressing on individuals and communities, such as its impact on self-esteem, objectification, and social cohesion, this evaluation aims to shed light on the broader implications. Moreover, it recognizes the ethical dimensions involved in this discussion, considering questions of personal freedom, cultural diversity, and the balance between individual expression and societal norms (Özlem & Beyza, 2018). Through this comprehensive assessment, the evaluation seeks to foster informed discussions and develop potential solutions that address the complexities surrounding indecent dressing, taking into account the diverse perspectives and values at play.
Throughout history, clothing has played a crucial role in allowing individuals to express their unique identities, celebrate their cultural heritage, and signal their sense of belonging within society. However, in contemporary times, the distinction between self-expression and indecency has become increasingly obscured. According to Beyleveld & Brownsword (2019) the advent of media influence, rapid changes in fashion trends, and the widespread use of social media platforms have resulted in heightened exposure for young people to a diverse range of fashion styles. While the freedom of expression is a fundamental right that should be upheld, it becomes imperative to critically evaluate the responsible exercise of this freedom within the boundaries of societal norms and ethical considerations. By examining the potential impact of clothing choices on individual behavior, social cohesion, and the overall fabric of society, we can gain a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play and foster informed discussions about striking a balance between personal expression and upholding ethical boundaries.
The impact of indecent dressing on students is far-reaching and complex, necessitating a thorough examination of its various dimensions. From a social standpoint, the repercussions are significant as it can contribute to the emergence of a culture of objectification, where individuals are reduced to mere objects of desire, undermining the fundamental principles of mutual respect and human dignity. Indecent dressing can perpetuate harmful stereotypes, reinforcing the notion that one’s worth is solely determined by physical appearance and promoting the commodification of individuals based on their looks (Dolan, N2015). This not only creates an environment that encourages superficial judgments but also reinforces societal pressures and unrealistic beauty standards. Moreover, the prevalence of indecent dressing may lead to the erosion of traditional values and moral integrity, potentially weakening the fabric of social cohesion. According to Byrd, Tharps and Johnson (2020) by carefully analyzing these implications, we can foster a deeper understanding of the consequences and engage in meaningful discussions about promoting healthier attitudes towards clothing choices that respect both individual expression and the well-being of the broader society.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
In recent years, indecent dressing has become a growing concern in educational institutions, particularly among students. This problem is evident in universities such as the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Mountain Top University (MTU), where a significant number of students engage in dressing styles that are deemed inappropriate or indecent according to societal norms and cultural values. This issue raises important socio-ethical questions about the impact of indecent dressing on the academic environment, student relationships, personal expression, and overall societal perceptions.
The problem of indecent dressing among students at UNILAG and MTU has led to various consequences. Firstly, it can create distractions and disruptions in the learning environment, as students who dress inappropriately may attract undue attention and cause discomfort among their peers and lecturers. This can impede the academic progress and concentration of other students, affecting the overall educational experience.
Secondly, the issue of indecent dressing raises ethical concerns related to personal expression and freedom of choice. While individuals have the right to express themselves through their attire, it is crucial to examine the boundaries of this freedom within an educational setting, where a balance must be struck between personal expression and maintaining a respectful and conducive environment for learning.
Furthermore, the problem of indecent dressing among students at UNILAG and MTU reflects broader societal implications. It highlights the influence of cultural norms, media, and peer pressure on students’ fashion choices, as well as the impact of these choices on public perceptions of the university and its students. This calls for a deeper understanding of the social and ethical factors that contribute to the prevalence of indecent dressing and how it shapes the overall campus culture and reputation.
Therefore, a comprehensive socio-ethical evaluation of indecent dressing among students at UNILAG and MTU is essential. Such an evaluation would explore the underlying causes, motivations, and consequences of indecent dressing, taking into consideration the perspectives of students, faculty, administration, and relevant stakeholders. By examining the socio-cultural and ethical dimensions of this issue, effective strategies can be developed to address the problem and foster a more inclusive, respectful, and conducive educational environment for all students.
Overall, this research aims to shed light on the socio-ethical implications of indecent dressing among students, using the University of Lagos and Mountain Top University as case studies. Through a deeper understanding of this phenomenon, it is expected that appropriate measures can be taken to promote responsible fashion choices, enhance the educational experience, and uphold the values of both academic institutions.
