ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the Evaluation of Organization and Administration of Intramural Sports Programme among secondary school students in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba state. To achieve this purpose, a survey research design was used. A sample size of 142 was used for the study. The instrument used was structured questionnaire. The findings of the study indicate that there is no significant influence of parents and teachers towards intramurals sports programme with calculated chi-square value of x2cal= 77.6 (x2 crit=7.82). The study further revealed that there is no significant influence of the availability of facilities and equipment towards intramural sports programme with calculated chi-square value of x2cal = 60.52 (x2 crit=7.82). The study further revealed that there is no significant influence of qualified  personal handling the intramural sports programme with calculated chi-square value of x2cal = 70.0 (x2 crit=7.82). The study further revealed that there is no significant influence of time allotted to intramural sports programme with Calculated chi-square value of x2cal = 78.6 (x2crit = 7.82). The study also revealed that there is no significant influence of funding on intramural sports programme with Calculated chi-square value of x2cal = 54.2 (x2crit = 7.82). In conclusion, poor organization and administration of intramural sports programme among secondary school students in Wukari Local Government Area is as a result of influence of parents and teachers, facilities and equipment, qualified personnel and funds allocated. Therefore, the researcher recommended among which are; government should employed qualified physical and health education teachers and create opportunity for refresher courses, parents should be sensitized through Parents Teachers Association (PTA) meeting on the merits of intramural sports in the secondary school students.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

Organization and administration of intramural sports programme grew out of student’s interest and demands for competitive physical education. Therefore, organization and administrative control became necessary. The most common organization and administration for participation was the class unit where in rivalries developed naturally and committee leadership prevailed. Many secondary schools became involve early in the organization and administration of intramural sports programme. Iheamacho, (2005) maintained that organization and administration of intramural sports programme is a process of dividing responsibilities among the personnel concerned and adjusting properly the relationship among the people so that the objective of the programme may be active without undue problems. Organization and administration of intramural sports programme put together is a way of “POSDCORBE” that is planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, budgeting and evaluation of sports performance to achieve the desire set goals.

Thus, it should involve the principal, teachers, games master and mistresses; students themselves joint efforts together and give their desired assistance to achieve the stated objective. Such assignment should be given by the school administrator. Organizational pattern for Administering intramural for secondary schools in designed with one administrative head, the principal who is charged with the overall responsibility. Intramural sports programme is not an early task. It can pose a lot of problems to teachers and personnel in the school. Every school is saddle with the responsible of organizing and administering its intramural sports. In other to ensure proper organization and administration, May committees are put in place to ensure a smooth committee but many competition ends in failure or what people term poor organization administration.

The principal or director of intramural programme must recognize the importance of encouragement and involving students in such administrative task as programme planning, policy making, budget planning and making of playing rules, as well as modifying, regulations, officiating, and supervising. Intramural sports organization and administration vary greatly, generally depending upon funding sources, facility priorities and the attitude of personnel. Intramural sports programme first came under faculty administrative control when the University of Michigion and the Ohio state university established intramural sports have grown tremendously in the recent past.

  • Statement of the Problem.

The researcher has observed that organization and administration of intramural sports programme among secondary school students was a concern in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State. A visibility study to these schools revealed that there were dearth of availability of facilities and equipment, lack of qualified personnel handling intramural sports, time allotted for intramural sports programme was not sufficient which the researcher observed as a stumbling block. After a careful observation by the researcher of the performance or participation of students in intramural sports, the researcher decided to evaluate the organization and administration of intramural sports programme and administration of intramural sport programme of students. The stated factor will help the researcher to satisfactorily determine the extent to which the goals and objective of intramural sports programme are achieved and why it fails to reach operational peak.

  • Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the organization and administration of intramural sports programme in some selected secondary schools in Wukari local government area of Taraba state. The specific objectives were therefore:

  1. To investigate the influence of parents and teachers towards intramural sports programme in secondary schools.
  2. To determine the availability of sporting facilities and equipment towards intramural sports programme in secondary schools.
  3. To determine if there are qualified personnel handling the intramural sports in the secondary schools.
  4. To determine the time allotted for the intramural sports programme in the secondary schools.
  5. To determine how funds are allotted to intramural sports programme.

  1. What is the time allotted for intramural sports programme in secondary school in Wukari Local Government Area?
  2. How are funds allocated for intramural sports programme in secondary schools in Wukari Local Government Area?

  • Research Hypotheses

To achieve the purpose of this study, the following hypothesis were formulated to guide the study

  1. There is no significant influence of parent and teachers towards intramural sports programme.
  2. Availability of facilities, equipment and supplies will not significantly influence sports programme.
  • There is no significant influence of qualified personnel on the intramural sports programme.
